Life

Barbara Pompili grew up in the Pas-de-Calais department and graduated from the Institut d'études politiques ( Sciences Po ) in Lille . In 2000 she became a member of Les Verts , the French Green Party, which in 2010 became Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV). From 2002 to 2007 she worked as Yves Cochet's parliamentary assistant .

She was elected to the French National Assembly in 2012 as a member of the 2nd constituency of the Somme department . From 2012 to 2015, she was co-chair of the Green Group with François de Rugy . As an advocate of her group's return to government, she left the EELV party in September 2015, but remained in the green parliamentary group, which she then led together with Cécile Duflot . In the following year she became a member of the ecological party Parti écologiste founded by Rugy , which was oriented more towards the political center and which the EELV course was to the left. On February 11, 2016, Pompili was appointed State Secretary for International Climate Relations and Biodiversity in the Ministry of the Environment (under Ségolène Royal ) in Manuel Valls' cabinet . She also retained this position in the Cazeneuve cabinet .

In the run-up to the 2017 presidential election , she initially supported François de Rugy's application for the candidacy of the center-left, which, however, failed. She then spoke out in favor of Emmanuel Macron , who ultimately won the election. Like de Rugy, Pompili joined the new presidential party La République en Marche and was re-elected to the National Assembly for it in June 2017. There she was Chair of the Committee for Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning until she took up the post of Minister for Ecological Transition in 2020.
