Barbil is a small town in the Indian state of Odisha .

The city is part of the Kendujhar District . Barbil has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 14 wards . It had a total of 66,540 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 34,938 were men and 31,602 women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of around 84%, followed by Muslims with around 10% and Christians with around 3%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 72.18%.

The region around Barbil has one of the world's largest deposits for iron ore and manganese ore. It is an important source of income for both the central government and the state government. Barbil is an industrial town with a number of steel mills, ore crushers and mines.

The city is connected to the national rail network by a train station.
