List of apple varieties |
The small male apple is a historical apple variety that was widespread over 200 years ago in what is now Germany. It was first described by Hirschfeld in 1788 and a little later by Adrian Diel .
In northern Germany it is mainly known as Drüwken or grape apple . For some time it was one of the main varieties in Mecklenburg . It was immortalized as “Druwappel” by the Low German dialect poet Fritz Reuter in the book Ut mine Stromtid : “as en por lütte Druwappel, de an eine Twig ween wiren” (“... like a few small grape apples that had grown on a branch "). In the Reutershagen district of Rostock there has been a Druwappelplatz since around 1922 , which is the first built-up and central square to be the nucleus of the district.
Variety characteristics
The fruit is mostly spherical with a smooth skin, lemon yellow color and a short stem. The flesh is yellowish-white, fluffy and juicy with a sweetish and slightly aromatic taste. The ripening period extends from September to December. The variety is robust and makes few demands on the location.
The small male apple can be grown in the lowlands as well as at higher altitudes, which is why it was declared the fruit variety of the year 2019 by the Saxon regional group of the pomologists' association in Saxony .
