List of apple varieties

The saffron apple is a historical regional apple variety that has been recorded in the Western Ore Mountains since around 1700 and is still widespread in the Vogtland and the Ore Mountains today. The Saxony regional group of the pomologists' association declared the saffron apple to be the “Saxon fruit variety 2017” .

Variety characteristics

The saffron apple is saffron yellow, very juicy and has a fine, sweet and sour taste. The fruits can be used both as dessert fruit or as a commercial apple, can be stored for a long time and are ready to be enjoyed around Christmas time. Typical of the apple is its pitted, lumpy surface.

The tree makes no special demands on the soil and can get very old. The variety is extremely frost-hardy and for this reason has proven itself in the rough locations of the Ore Mountains and Vogtland. A larger occurrence is in the Waldkirchen area (Lengenfeld) .

Because of its good taste and long shelf life as a winter table apple, the variety is also suitable for processing purposes.
