Barbourisia rufa is a rare deep-sea fish from the order of the mucous head-like (Beryciformes). The 39 centimeter long fish lives juvenile mesopelagic , as adult animals benthopelagic in the tropical and temperate regions of all oceans. Presumably it feeds on crustaceans . The genus and the family are named in honor of the American zoologist Thomas Barbour (1884-1946).
features
Barbourisia rufa has a large head and a large mouth that extends far behind the small eyes. The teeth are small and in a band-like arrangement are very close together in both jaws. The body is soft and spongy and covered by small scales with a central thorn that give the surface of the skin a velvety appearance.
The lateral line organ is well developed and extends along the body as a broad, pored band protected by scales under the skin. The fish are colored bright orange-red. There are no luminous organs.
The fins have no hard rays. The dorsal and anal fin are symmetrically opposite each other, far back on the body. The pectoral and pelvic fins are very small.
Fin formula : dorsal 19–22, anal 15–18, pectoral 13–14, ventral 6, caudal 19
