The Baris is a Kiribati-flagged coaster that made headlines after drifting off Crete with several hundred mostly Syrian refugees in late November 2014. The ship was brought to Ierapetra by a Greek frigate .

Together with the refugee ships Sandy , Blue Sky M and Ezadeen , which were later brought in under comparable circumstances , the case of the Baris led to an extensive debate about the use of larger ships by smugglers and refugee policy in the Mediterranean.

history

The ship

The coaster was built in 1986/87 as the Sae Bang Sun by the Kwang Yang Shipbuilding & Engineering shipyard in Gunsan. In 1994 the ship was renamed Sunho Noble and in 2004 it was sold to Barco Shipping and renamed Barco . In 2010 the Bay Shipping & Trading Corporation in Panama acquired the ship and renamed it Baris . In 2013 the ship was transferred to Mediterranean Logistics Corporation without renaming and with the same management. The operation has been carried out since 2010 by the shipping company ACT Deniz Tasimaciligi Sanayi in Istanbul.

As a refugee ship

At the end of November 2014, the Baris drifted with around 700 refugees on board with machine damage in bad weather in international waters off the coast of Crete. The ship was towed with a frigate into the port of Ierapetra in southern Crete, where the refugees were taken care of.

Technical specifications

The ship is propelled by a diesel engine from the manufacturer Hanshin (type 6LUN 28 G) with an output of 1300 HP.

For power generation on board a total of three generator sets available, two diesel engines from Daewoo (type MGG) with 106  kW power, the two generators of Leachun (type TGS-C) with 83  kVA apparent power drive, as well as emergency generator , a diesel engine from Deutz ( Type TD 2268-4) with 60 kW power, which drives an Emsa generator (type EM) with 56 kVA apparent power.
