Barium soap is a collective name for barium salts of individual fatty acids or - more often - mixtures of barium salts of several fatty acids.
Manufacturing
The saponification of natural fats and oils with barium hydroxide provides mixtures of barium salts of fatty acids and glycerine . The proportions of the individual fatty acid anions in the mixture of barium salts depends on the nature and provenance of the triglyceride used as the raw material . A chemically largely uniform barium soap can be obtained by reacting a pure fatty acid with a stoichiometric amount of barium oxide . Examples of such barium soaps are:
- Barium oleate, the barium salt of oleic acid .
- Barium palmitate, the barium salt of palmitic acid (hexadecanoic acid).
- Barium stearate , the barium salt of stearic acid (octadecanoic acid), white, crystalline mass, insoluble in water and alcohol (ethanol).
use
Barium soaps are used as a thickener in mineral oil- based lubricants and lubricants , as a stabilizer for PVC and in water-repellent preparations.
