An area in Sweden known as Barnens Ö is part of the parish Väddö in the municipality of Norrtälje in the province of Stockholm County . Children's and youth camps have been held there since 1912. It includes Lingslätö in the southern part of Väddö and adjacent parts of Granö and Salnö. The area borders the Åland Sea to the east and Bagghusfjärden Bay to the west.

history

Before Barnens Ö was inaugurated in 1912, there were extensive plans as to whether the railway line ( Roslagsbanan ), which turns east after Edsbro, should pass directly south of today's Bagghus Bridge and have its terminus in the vicinity of Granö. The railway line was an important prerequisite for those business people who had plans to build a bathing and hotel complex based on the continental model on the southern Väddö island, for example in the style of the grand hotel in Saltsjöbaden . The company Samnäs AB was founded for this project, but it could not be realized. Thought was given to running luxurious ships between Väddö and St. Petersburg , but these grandiose ideas never got beyond the planning stage. The wealthy Stockholmers who were supposed to live there felt that it was far too far away and too few were interested in investing money in the planned railway line. There were also fears that the cruise ships could run aground. The planned hotel and bathing complex became Barnens Ö instead.

In 1911 the Barnens Dag Foundation bought the site for 50,000 Swedish kronor from donations.

Barnens Ö was inaugurated in 1912 after the Barnens Dag Foundation bought the Lingslätö area. There were already two holiday camps there (Östergården and Västergården) operated by Östermalms skollovskoloniförening. These were integrated into Barnens Ö, and the new leisure centers Vretarna, Stugorna and Solbo, as well as a hospital were added. Other leisure facilities were later added through donations, for example: Wassbergs minnen, the Cervinska home (Cervinska hemmet) and the Assö farm (Assögården).

Today around 20 holiday leisure centers (Swedish: barnkoloni ) belong to Barnens Ö. The area covers around 650 hectares , and the offer also includes hosting conferences and renting holiday apartments.

Barnens Ö serves as the setting for the family saga and television series Blutsbande, which has been broadcast since 2014 .
