Barney Burcham

Ruble Elijah "Barney" Burcham (born September 1923 near Corinth , Mississippi , † February 1992 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an American country and rockabilly musician.

Life

Childhood and youth

Burcham was born in 1923 on a farm between Glen and Corinth, Mississippi, where he grew up. He became interested in music from an early age.

Career

In 1940 Burcham had his first band, with which he stayed for 20 years. For his professional musician career, Burcham took the name "Barney". After the war he worked as a mechanic and in 1945 he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he married Devola McKelroy. Burcham got a job with the Hunter Fan Company.

In 1955 Barney got the opportunity to make recordings at Meteor Records under unexplained circumstances . His tracks Much Too Young For Love and Can't Steal My Way Around , recorded in September 1955 with the Daydreamers, were released that same year. His background band also included guitarist Reggie Young, who would later become a member of Eddie Bond's group, the Stompers.

Two years later, Burcham made another record on Moon Records , this time in rockabilly style. Label owner Cordell Jackson met Burcham at a songwriting convention and a short time later recorded the tracks I Fell and Chain of Broken Hearts in Jackson's small studio . However, he gave up his career in the late 1950s. Burcham continued to work for the Hunter Fan Company until he retired. Barney Burcham died in Memphis in 1992.
