Life

Childhood and youth

Cordell Jackson was the daughter of a fiddler. She learned instruments such as guitar , piano and upright bass , and later also mandolin , banjo and harmonica . However, she became known with her electric guitar, a Hagström . In 1943 she married and moved to Memphis , Tennessee .

Career

After a few years in the local scene, in which she not only played music, but also wrote, recorded and produced songs for herself and others, she founded her own label Moon Records in 1956 . Jackson had previously recorded songs in Sam Phillips ' studio and tried to get a record deal with his label Sun Records , but failed again and again. So she followed the advice of guitarist Chet Atkins and founded her own label. After Jackson had released her own single Beboppers' Christmas b / w Rock and Roll Christmas here, she soon released rockabilly singles by other artists. The most famous Moon act was Allen Page and the Big Four . In 1959 she sold her recording equipment and stopped producing Moon Records as an active label.

In the 1970s and 1980s Jackson developed a comedy act called Maxie Pearl (as an alter ego to popular country comedy character Minnie Pearl ), recorded a song called Football Widow , and produced a Christian radio show.

She made a comeback into the national and international rockabilly scene during the rockabilly and roots rock revival in the 1980s, thanks to the attention of younger artists such as Tav Falco and Alex Chilton . She took on new tracks and reactivated the Moon Records label.

She became a legend as "The Rockin 'Granny" ("the rocking grandma"). In addition to the electric guitar, her trademark was a deliberately old-fashioned pre-war dress. She was considered extremely humorous, unconventional and independent. Even in old age, she appeared very youthful and dynamic.

In 1991 she appeared in a Budweiser commercial with Brian Setzer .

Cordell Jackson succumbed to a long illness.
