Award and subordinate titles

The title was bestowed on June 19, 1801, to George Onslow, 4th Baron Onslow . He had been a member of the House of Commons for around 20 years and held various offices at court. Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Cranley , of Cranley in the County of Surrey . As early as May 20, 1776, he had been awarded the subordinate title Baron Cranley , of Imber Court in the County of Surrey, in the Peerage of Great Britain .

In 1776 he had from his second cousin Richard Onslow, 3rd Baron Onslow , the subordinate titles of 4th Baron Onslow , of Onslow in the County of Salop and of Clandon in the County of Surrey, and 5th Baronet , of West Clandon in the County of Surrey, inherited. The latter was awarded on May 8, 1674 in the Baronetage of England by his great-great-grandfather Arthur Onslow , with the peculiarity that with regard to the protocol order of precedence it should be considered to have been granted on November 21, 1660 - on this date his father-in-law was Thomas Foote (around 1592–1688) was raised to Baronet, of London. The former had been made Speaker of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir Richard Onslow, 2nd Baronet , on June 19, 1716 in the Peerage of Great Britain to his great-grandfather, the son of the 1st Baronet, with the special note: that in the absence of male descendants of the 1st Baron, this barony could also pass to his uncle Denzil Onslow (around 1642–1721) and his male descendants and then to his brothers and their male descendants.

Today's owner of the title has been the great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson of the 1st Earl, Rupert Onslow, 8th Earl of Onslow .
