George Onslow, 1st Earl of Onslow , PC (born September 13, 1731 in Soho , London , † May 17, 1814 ) was an English nobleman and politician .

Life

Family and title

Onslow was born the son of the politician Arthur Onslow and his wife Anne Bridges. He had an older sister and a younger sister. On June 26, 1753 he married Henrietta Shelley, daughter of Sir John Shelley. The wedding took place in Thames Ditton . The couple had five children, three of whom died in infancy. Since there was no direct male descendant at the death of his great cousin Richard Onslow, 3rd Baron Onslow , the hereditary title of Baron Onslow of Onslow passed to him in 1776. The title of 1st Earl of Onslow was bestowed on him on June 19, 1801. After his death, Onslow was buried in Merrow . The titles passed to his eldest son Thomas .

Career

Onslow first received his education at Westminster School , where he was accepted in September 1739. This was followed by studies at the closed Peterhouse College of Cambridge University on. There he was awarded the Master of Arts in 1766 . As early as 1754 he took over the position of Out Ranger in Windsor Great Park . In the same year he was elected to parliament for Rye . He held this seat until 1761. Then he took over that of the Surrey constituency , which he represented until 1774. During this time he held the post of Surveyor of the King's Gardens and Waters from 1761 to 1763 and worked in the Department of Commerce. 1767 Onslow was Georg III. elevated to the position of crown attorney . After leaving Parliament, he held various positions at the King's court, including that of Treasurer of the Household .
