Baron Ferrers of Chartley
Baron Ferrers of Chartley is a currently dormant hereditary British nobility title in the Peerage of England .
Award
The title was established on February 6, 1299 for John de Ferrers, a son of the 6th Earl of Derby , when he was appointed to Parliament by Writ of Summons . Since John de Ferrers, 2nd Baron Ferrers of Chartley was still a minor when he died, according to various sources he is not considered to be the title holder, which shifts the numbering of the title holders.
As Barony by writ , the title is also hereditary in the female line and fell repeatedly into Abeyance , most recently in 1855 when the 17th baron died. The title has not been re-issued since then, and the claim to the title has been shared between the two sisters of the last baron and their heirs.
On July 26, 1461, the husband of the 8th Baroness was elected to Parliament by Writ of Summons as Baron Ferrers of Chartley. According to some legal opinion, this did not take place de iure uxoris , but represented a parallel re-award of the title.
