Earl of Guilford
Earl of Guilford is a British title of nobility named after the town of Guildford in Surrey and created a total of three times.
First award in 1660
The title was first created in 1660 as a Life Peerage in the Peerage of England for Elizabeth Boyle (as Countess of Guilford ). She was the daughter of William Feilding, 1st Earl of Denbigh , widow of Lewis Boyle, 1st Viscount Boyle of Kinalmeaky , and maid of the Queen Mother Henrietta Maria . The title expired with her death in September 1667.
Second award in 1674
In the second bestowal, the title was created on June 25, 1674 for the Scottish nobleman John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale . At the same time he was given the subordinate title of Baron Petersham . Both titles belonged to the Peerage of England. The titles were hereditary, but expired with the death of the first title holder on August 24, 1682 because he had no children.
Third award in 1752
The third bestowal of the title was created on April 8, 1752 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Francis North, 3rd Baron Guilford .
The 1st Earl had inherited the title (3rd) Baron Guilford , of Guilford in the County of Surrey from his father as early as 1729 , which was created for his grandfather in 1683 in the Peerage of England.
He had also inherited the title (7th) Baron North , of Kirtling Tower in the County of Cambridge from a distant relative in 1735 , which had been created in the Peerage of England in 1554. After the death of the 3rd Earl in 1802, this title fell in Abeyance , was later continued by another line of the family and has been abeyant again since 1941. The earl's apparent marriage has had the courtesy title of Lord North since 1752 to this day , although the legal basis for this has lapsed since 1802.
Guilford County in the US state of North Carolina is named after Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford.
The family home of the Earls of Guilford is Waldershare House, near Dover in Kent .
