Barra de Navidad is a small town on the Pacific coast of the Mexican state Jalisco in the municipality of Cihuatlán with about 4,000 permanent residents. During the season , the population of the seaside resort increases significantly.
Geography, botany, wildlife
The extensive Laguna de Barra de Navidad , exposed to the tides and through which the Marabasco River drains into the sea, extends southeast of the town . The south bank of the lagoon is already part of the state of Colima .
In addition to the bathing activities, the place is rich in nature. Tamarinds , kapok trees , jacarandas , mangroves and palm trees grow . The bird world offers capercaillie , toucans , blackbirds , nightingales and curlews , the marine fauna includes marlin , salminus , fanfish and tuna .
In the last years of his life, the former German world-class swimmer and trainer Gerhard Hetz († 2012) ran a hotel on the lagoon side with his family in Barra de Navidad.

The place played a certain role in the Age of Discovery and in maritime history .:
- Ruy López de Villalobos started an expedition to the East Indies on November 1, 1542 in the port of Barra de Navidad.
- The Portuguese João Rodrigues Cabrilho reached Navidad on April 14, 1543.
- Miguel López de Legazpi cast off in 1564 with 500 soldiers, also on the way to the Philippines .
- Andrés de Urdaneta , one of the early circumnavigators on the trail of Magellan , reached the place from the west in 1565.
