Barakpur ( Bengali : বারাকপুর , Bārākpur ; English : Barrackpore ) is a place in the Indian state of West Bengal with about 154,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

location

Barakpur is located north of Kolkata in the North 24 Parganas district on Hugli and is part of the Kolkata metropolitan area . The city has an average height of 15 meters above sea level.

history

The name Barakpur is probably derived from the English word “barrack” (German: barrack ). The city got this name because it was one of the first major military bases of the British East India Company in the east of the Indian subcontinent. The first military branch in this region was established in 1772. Before that time, Barakpur was known as Chanak . Occasionally, however, it is also pointed out that Barakpur was already a center during the Mughal rule under the Mughal Aurangzeb , in which the traditional tax "khajna" was collected and that the city was called Barbakpur at that time . Over time it became Barakpur and the similarity with the English word “barrack” is purely coincidental.

The city was the center of two revolts against British rule . In 1824 the first uprising took place here under the Sepoy Binda Tiwari . In 1857 the Sepoy Mangal Pandey rebelled against British orders and seriously injured two British officers. This incident is considered to be the immediate trigger of the Indian uprising of 1857 .

Barakpur is the administrative seat of the sub-district of the same name in the North 24 Parganas district and is also the seat of one of the dioceses of the Church of North India .
