The Suffren class is a class of nuclear powered hunting submarines under construction for the French Navy .
This type is sometimes referred to as the Barracuda-class , but Barracuda is the name of the development program that includes the development of the Australian Attack-class submarine (or Shortfin Barracuda , the conventionally powered version).
history
In 1998 the French Ministry of Defense set up a commission with members of the Délégation Générale pour l'Armement , the Direction des Constructions Navales , the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique and Technicatome to design a new class of fighter submarines. In 2002 the feasibility study was completed and the design phase of the project began.
At the end of 2006 a contract was signed with the DCN, which amounts to EUR 1 to 1.4 billion, but can increase to EUR 7.9 billion by taking all options for six boats. From 2020, the boats are scheduled to go into service at a rate of one boat every two years and replace the Rubis-class hunting submarines by around 2029 .
technology
The Suffren class boats will be 99.5 meters long and displace almost 5000 tons; this makes them twice as heavy as their predecessors in the Rubis class . The diving depth should be more than 300 meters.
The boats are fed with energy from a K15 pressurized water reactor with an output of 150 MW, the maximum speed should be over 25 knots . A nozzle ring propeller is used instead of a propeller . A version of the submarine with diesel-electric propulsion is being built for the Australian Navy .
Each boat will have four 533mm torpedo tubes. The armament is a mixture of around 20 torpedoes , anti-ship missiles and MDCN - cruise missiles are made. In addition, each Suffren can carry up to ten combat swimmers who can be deployed off enemy coasts for special operations.
