Barril de Alva is a place and a former municipality in central Portugal .

history

The place was officially mentioned for the first time in the registers of the year 1527, where it was documented as a village belonging to Coja Barril with ten households. In 1721 the place already had three church chapels, and the parish priest gave 29 households for Barril in 1727.

The population of the village continued to grow steadily. On November 5, 1894, the music association Sociedade Filarmónica Barrilense was founded here , which in July 1896 already had 24 active musicians in its ranks. The further growth led on July 25, 1924 to the separation from the community Vila Cova de Sob-Avô, which was then renamed Vila Cova de Alva . With the establishment of the independent community Barril, it was given its current name.

With the territorial reform of 2013 , the municipality of Barril de Alva was dissolved again and merged with Coja .
