Bartholomäus Ostermair (born August 15, 1837 in Metzenried , † May 3, 1899 in Unterweilenbach ), called Saubartl, was a German bricklayer . Many of the mortar sculptures he created are now under monument protection .

Life

Ostermair was born in Metzenried in 1837 as the tenth of twelve children. After completing his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he acquired Saubartl property no.8 in Unterweilenbach in 1865 . In the following year he married the Singenbacher Gütler daughter Afra Huber. While the farm was run by his wife and eight children, Ostermair hired himself out as a migrant worker in the summer months. He created numerous mortar pictures on building walls for little money, which are only partially preserved today. Ostermair was very versatile and creative here. He always had a sample booklet with him, with drawings from which the client could choose their motif. The execution was always done individually. Today his works are considered a unique example of Bavarian folk art . Ostermair died on May 3, 1899 and is buried in Weilach near Gachenbach .
