Bartolomeo Bassante (or Passante ) (* 1618 in Brindisi , † around 1650 in Naples ) was a painter in Naples during the Baroque period . He came to the city in 1628 and became a pupil of the little-known Pietro Beato . His name is probably incorrectly mentioned by Bernardo De Dominici as a passer-by in 1742 . There he is also listed as a student of the Neapolitan painter Jusepe de Ribera , who came from Spain, and Passante's pictures are described as 'hardly distinguishable from his work'.

Bartolomeo Bassante can only be assigned to two signed works with certainty. However, today it is widely assumed that he is identical with the master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds , the important Neapolitan baroque painter, to whom more than 40 surviving pictures from this period are assigned, all of which would then have to be dated around 15 years later.
