Renewed marketplace

Pazari i Ri is a district of the Albanian capital Tirana east of the central Skanderbeg Square . The name is derived from the local market ( bazaar , Albanian pazar ), which borders Avni-Rustemi-Platz in the north . It is one of the old quarters of the city with the 18th century Kokonozi Mosque in the center.

history

Market bustle in Tirana in the 1920s

With the construction of the Old Mosque , a caravanserai (Han) , a bakery and a hammam in 1614 - presumably around a regular bazaar and fair that had gained in importance - Tirana was officially founded under Sulejman Pascha Bargjini . Up until the 20th century, shops and trading activities were limited to the original bazaar, which had developed over the years between the Old Mosque and the Et'hem Bey Mosque to the west, as well as to areas adjacent to the north, and encompassed several blocks. After Tirana was designated the capital of Albania at the Lushnja Congress in 1920 and had grown rapidly, trading activities expanded to include neighboring districts.

The city became more modern and Skanderbeg Square was laid out near the Et'hem Bey Mosque . Since the (old) bazaar could not grow any further, the city government decided in 1928 to relocate the meat, fish and vegetables trade to a new location. The plan was to build around 60 shops, the Pazari i Ri , at the Vorret e Pashës 250 meters east of the Old Mosque, where Avni Rustemi Square is today . Up until now there were no shops selling meat, fish and vegetables in Tirana apart from a few fruit shops.

The new bazaar opened in 1931. The roofs erected at that time, under which there were simple sales stalls, survived until 2015. A butcher's hall was built later.

Despite the ban, farmers and traders later still sold their products on the streets of the Old Bazaar . After the Old Bazaar was demolished in 1959 together with the Stërmasi Mosque for the building of the Palace of Culture , the Pazari i Ri remained Tirana's only major trading center for meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and other products for a long time. Its large area was reduced a little again by the construction of several residential buildings in the 1990s.

In the years 2015 to 2017 the market was renewed and renovated. The stands were given a new roof, the area became a pedestrian zone and the surrounding houses were brightly painted. As a result of these urban renewals and the opening of some restaurants and cafés, the Pazari i ri also developed into a tourist destination and a nightlife district. The redesigned square was named winner in the Renewal Project of the Year category in 2018 by the London think tank Emerging Europe .

District

The quarter offers a wild mix of communist apartment buildings, new high-rise buildings and old buildings. The Avni-Rustemi-Platz, together with the surrounding villas, has been a cultural monument of Albania since 2007.

The New Bazaar in 2017 after the renovation

The bazaar now includes a meat hall with adjoining fish shops, numerous stalls for fruit, vegetables, tobacco and souvenirs as well as shops, restaurants and cafes all around. A supermarket has also moved into a house on the square. There are numerous household goods dealers and bicycle shops in the streets adjoining to the north. A little to the west there is a school, the public prosecutor's office and a polyclinic.
