Base Aérea de Armilla is a military airfield of the Spanish Air Force in Armilla around eleven kilometers south of the city of Granada in the Spanish province of Granada of the same name . It is used in particular to train helicopter crews.
history
It was the first airfield in Andalusia and one of the oldest airfields in all of Spain, which is still actively operated today. The first manned balloon flight (Aerostáticas) took place in 1895. During the Feria del Corpus de Granada in 1911, the first powered aircraft took off from the former Hipódromo de Armilla (horse racing track) as part of an air show . At the beginning of the First World War , the airfield was expanded. The official opening took place in June 1922. The Aeródromo Militar de Armilla had workshops, warehouses, accommodations for officers and soldiers, a telegraph station and two hangars for 17 aircraft each. In 1925 it was named Aeródromo Dávila , in memory of the fatally injured pilot and first commander Luis Dávila Ponce de León . In 1934 the exhibition and air show Exhibición del Autogiro Juan de la Cierva took place. During the Spanish Civil War, the Aeródromo was used again for military operations.
From 1946 the airfield was opened for civil and commercial air traffic. In the 1950s, the airfield was expanded, the runway was paved and in 1952 a control tower was added. 1954 followed the construction of a terminal building for civil aviation.
Due to the limited opportunity to expand the runway for the emerging jet traffic, the construction of a new civil airport in the municipal areas of Chauchina and Santa Fe was carried out in the mid-1960s. The new Granada-Jaén airport for civil aviation opened in 1972. From 1973 the military training center Academia General del Aire (CSAGA) was opened and the place closed for civil use.
