Basil Studer

Basil Studer (born May 15, 1925 in Balsthal ; † April 25, 2008 in Engelberg ; actually Franz-Xaver Studer ) was a Swiss patristic .

Life

Basil Studer was born as Franz-Xaver Studer in Balsthal and entered the monastery school of Engelberg Monastery in 1937 , where he graduated from high school in 1945. After a propaedeutic year at the Lucerne Seminary , he was accepted as a candidate at Engelberg Monastery and in 1950 made his solemn profession as a Benedictine of Engelberg; he took the religious name Basilius .

Studer received his theological training at the theological school in Engelberg. After his ordination in 1951, he continued his studies at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo and graduated with a doctorate in theology . From 1955 to 1957 he taught at the theological school and at the collegiate school in Engelberg . In autumn 1957 Studer was appointed to teach at the interdiocesan seminary of Otélé in Cameroon , which was led by the Engelberg Benedictines. From 1962 to 1964, theological training was deepened in Paris . Then he took over the chair for ancient church history and patristic at the theological college of the Benedictines Sant'Anselmo in Rome . He taught there until his retirement in 1999. From 1968 to 1974 he headed the university as rector . Studer also taught at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum from 1972 to 2006 . Studer was respected as an outstanding Augustine specialist. Towards the end of his research, he was primarily concerned with the relationship between faith and history and the exegesis methods of the Latin fathers . The theological faculty of the University of Lucerne awarded Studer an honorary doctorate in 1998 .
