As the city grew, the construction of the new church was commissioned in 1897. The church, completed in 1898, received the new patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The church was solemnly consecrated in 1920 . At that time, the Marist Fathers took care of the parish, whose mission area covered large parts of northern Georgia.

Building

The architect Walter T. Downing designed a three-aisled basilica in the neo-Romanesque style inspired by France. The brick and terracotta church was given a double tower facade , and a rose window opens between the octagonal towers on the upper floor .

An important part of the church furnishings are the 28 glass windows that were created in 1902 at the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich . Today's organ was created in Montreal in 2002 as Opus 3823 by Casavant Frères and consecrated for Christmas. 46 registers can be played over three 3 manuals .
