The Basilica Jesus von Nazareth ( Spanish Basilica Menor Jesus Nazareno ) is a Roman Catholic church in Atalaya near Santiago de Veraguas in Panama . The pilgrimage church of the parish of San Miguel belonging to the diocese of Santiago de Veraguas is consecrated to Jesus of Nazareth and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The reason for building the church was the pilgrimage to a Jesus figure, the origin of which is unclear and probably dates from the 17th century. The pilgrimage is documented for the first time in 1730. In 1753 a three-nave church was built. In 1773 a new building was started, which was completed in 1802 without a tower. On the front of the church, however, the year 1807 to 1925 appears. The church was built with brick walls and the roof was covered with tiles. The three-tier church tower was built from 1923 to 1925 and decorated with columns and a balustrade. The church was then consecrated.

The interior was greatly upgraded over the next few decades. The chancel was given a floor made of Carrara marble, decorative columns were used instead of wooden pillars, mahogany pews and stained glass windows were built in.

Pope Paul VI awarded the church the rank of minor basilica in 1964 . The solemn exaltation was celebrated by the Archbishop of Panama Francisco Beckmann .

Pilgrimage

The pilgrimage to the processions with the statue of Jesus Nazareno de Atalaya , popularly known as "El Nazareno", is the destination of more than 200,000 pilgrims each year. These take place from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, when the largest procession in Panama ends. Many pilgrims accompany the figure on long stretches on foot.
