The Basilica Queen of All Saints ( English Queen of All Saints Basilica ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the civil district of Sauganash in northern Chicago , United States . The minor basilica, dedicated to the patronage of Mary Queen , is one of three basilicas in the Archdiocese of Chicago .

history

In 1929 the Calvert Club, a fraternal Catholic organization, obtained the establishment of a parish church in the Sauganash area from the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal George Mundelein . Forty Catholic families lived in the new parish at that time. In addition, a wooden frame church that had previously served as St. Giles Church in nearby Oak Park was moved and consecrated to the Queen of All Saints in June 1929. The adjacent Queen of All Saints School was founded in 1932. The area filled with housing developments after World War II and initially attracted Irish and German immigrants and their descendants. The ethnic make-up of the neighborhood has not changed since then, with the two dominant ethnic groups blending strongly.

The present church was built by Meyer and Cook in 1956. The church was completed and consecrated in 1960. The magnificent, cathedral-like church was built on March 26, 1962 by Pope John XXIII. raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

Building

The church was built in the shape of a three-aisled basilica in neo-Gothic style. Its dimensions are 73 meters long, 24 meters wide and 24 meters high. The side church tower rises 43 meters high.

In the choir gallery there are eight different Marian shrines: Black Madonna of Czestochowa , Our Lady of Knock , Our Lady of Einsiedeln , Our Lady of the Snow , Our Lady of La Salette , Our Lady of Guadalupe , Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima . This exhibition demonstrates the universality of the Catholic Church by emphasizing that although these shrines are specific to a particular country or culture, the cult of Mary bridges all of these barriers and brings together the different ethnic groups living in Sauganash.

The original organ from the 1930s was replaced in 2006 due to its poor age and an act of vandalism in the 1970s. The new instrument is a three-manual work by Berghaus Pipe Organ Builders of Bellwood, Illinois.
