history

Icon of Mary from Budslau

For the first time a church at the site in 1504 was mentioned in documents as the Grand Duke Alexander Bernard brothers from Vilnius granted 6,000 acres of forest in the Minsk district. Two to four monks lived in the buildings, which also included a chapel.

In 1591 a wooden Visitation Church was built to house the miraculous icon of Our Lady, the last one brought from Rome by Jan Pats in 1598 as a gift from Pope Clement VIII and given to the church in 1613. The canvas painting has a size of 72 × 65 cm. In 1643 a new brick church was built, and in 1750 a housing estate was built.

The construction of today's church began on June 29, 1767; some of the walls of the 17th century chapel were used in its construction. In 1783 the church was consecrated to Our Lady. Various rooms were added to the church in the second half of the 18th century. A music school taught in the monastery from 1756 and a two-year school from 1793 to 1842, as well as a hospital. From 1731 to 1797 moral theology and rhetoric were taught at the theological school, the number of monks fluctuated between 4 and 17.

In 1852 the church was closed and some monks of the monastery took part in the January uprising of 1863/64.

The rectory from the 19th century near the church has been preserved.

In 1993 Pope John Paul II granted the church the rank of minor basilica .

Sanctuary

The baroque church is a three-aisled basilica with two steeples. This two-tower facade is heavily decorated with pilasters and columns. The chancel after the transept has no apse . The naves are covered with barrel vaults that merge into a dome over the crossing .

In the chapel of St. Barbara there is the carved wooden altar of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (around 1643) - one of the most outstanding early Baroque monuments in Belarus. The back of the altar forms a Corinthian colonnade that serves as a backdrop for 20 sculptures. The church's excellent frescoes have been preserved without any changes to this day.
