The Basilica of the Assumption ( Romanian Bazilica Adormirea Maicii Domnului ) is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of Cacica in the northern Romanian district of Suceava . The church in today's diocese of Iași with the rank of minor basilica was built in 1904 in neo-Gothic style.

prehistory

With the start of salt mining in Cacica in 1798, workers from different parts of the Habsburg Empire , especially Poland , came to the place. A chapel was built in the salt mine in 1806 and a wooden church in 1810 for the congregation of Polish Catholics.

Church building

At the end of the 19th century the old church became dilapidated and after attempts at renovation in 1892 it was torn down in 1903. With the laying of the foundation stone by Bishop Joseph Weber in the same year, construction of the new church began, partly using the old foundations. On October 16, 1904, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Józef Bilczewski in the presence of Bishop Weber.

The church, built of quarry stone and red brick, has a cross-shaped floor plan, a width of 23 meters and is 36 meters long with an interior height of 14 meters. The church tower above the entrance area reaches a height of 50 meters.

In 1910 a large altar, a pulpit and a balustrade were bought from the Stuflesser company from Tyrol. In 1911, side altars of the Madonna of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows were acquired. The stained glass windows of the choir reveal the five secrets of the glorious rosary . A copy of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa , probably from the 17th century, which the church received from the Armenian Catholic Church in Stanisławów , is of particular importance for the pilgrimage .

The Lourdes Grotto was inaugurated in 1910, and in 1911 it received statues of the Madonna of Lourdes and Bernadette . In 1936, a 60 meter long semicircular gallery was consecrated around the Lourdes grotto behind the church.
