Petru Gherghel (born June 28, 1940 in Gherăeşti , Neamț County , Romania ) is a Romanian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Iaşi .

Life

Petru Gherghel visited the seminary in Iasi and received on June 29 in 1965 by the bishop of Alba Iulia , Áron Márton , the sacrament of Holy Orders . After a chaplaincy , he became a professor at the seminary in Iași on November 1, 1970 and its rector on March 1, 1970.

On February 21, 1978 appointed him Pope Paul IV. , By decree of the Congregation for Bishops to Professor ad nutum Sanctae Sedis cum munere administratoris apostolicis of the Diocese of Iasi. He campaigned for the formation of priests and succeeded in sending almost 150 priests abroad to study. From 1978 to 1990 Gherghel was Apostolic Administrator of Iași.

After the end of the Ceaușescu era and the normalization of the church situation, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Iași on March 14, 1990. The official in the Vatican State Secretariat , Archbishop Angelo Sodano , donated him episcopal ordination on May 1st of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Bucharest , Ioan Robu , and the Bishop of Munster , Reinhard Lettmann . On August 15, 1990, Bishop Peter Gherghel laid the foundation stone for the new cathedral Sfânta Maria Regină ("Queen of Mary"), which he was able to inaugurate on November 1, 2005.

On July 6, 2019, Pope Francis accepted Petru Gherghel's resignation due to reasons of age.
