The Collegiate Basilica of the Assumption ( Polish Bazylika kolegiacka Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny ) is a Roman Catholic church in Kalisz in the Greater Poland Voivodeship . The church of the Diocese of Kalisz has the title of a minor basilica . With the sanctuary of St. Joseph of Nazareth, it is the center of Joseph veneration in Poland.

description

The Gothic choir of the church, which was probably built at the beginning of the 14th century, is covered with a star vault . Thanks to the foundation of the Archbishop of Gniezno Jarosław Bogoria from 1359, the choir was extended by a three-aisled nave in the Gothic style, and the church was elevated to the status of a collegiate church. In 1783, the demolition of the bishop's palace adjacent to the church led to the collapse of the west facade, the central part of the church up to the choir and the south-east wall. In 1790, a new, longer main nave in Baroque style and two sacristies with a chapter house and a tower were added to the Gothic choir . The classicistic high altar from 1829 shows a picture of Mary from 1424. After the destruction, the top of the tower was rebuilt in 1948.

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1965 and in 1978 by Pope Paul VI. raised to the minor basilica. In 1997 Pope John Paul II visited the basilica and prayed in front of the image of the Holy Family. The veneration of St. Joseph, which dates back to 1670, brings a large number of pilgrims, especially craftsmen, to Kalisz every year.
