The Basilica of Mary of Mount Carmel of La Legua ( Spanish Basílica del Carmen de la Legua ) is a Roman Catholic church in Callao , the port city of the Peruvian capital Lima . The church of the Callao diocese is consecrated to the Blessed Mother Mary under the invocation of the patron saint of sailors, Our Lady of Mount Carmel , and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church originally dates back to the 16th century and is considered to be the oldest building in Callao. It is halfway from the port to the center of Lima and has long been connected to a monastery and an infirmary. At the beginning of the 17th century it was mentioned several times in records, because of the management of the hospital by the hospital order of St. John of God , it was sometimes named after this saint. The image of the Virgin of Carmel is said to come from the early days of the Church.

In addition to many earthquakes, the church survived a tsunami in 1746 due to its rearward location , in which Callao only had 200 survivors out of an estimated 5000 deaths. In 1959 the church in the growing city became a parish church. In a serious bomb attack in May 1992 on the neighboring La Legua police station, the former monastery, the church was also badly damaged. The entrance area with its portal and the side towers had to be rebuilt, the altar area with the statue of the Virgin Mary remained undamaged. After the restoration, the church was declared a sanctuary in 1994. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica.
