The Basilica of St. Anna ( Spanish Basílica de Santa Ana ) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Rengo in the Chilean Región de O'Higgins . The church belonging to the diocese of Rancagua is St. Anna and has the title of minor basilica .

history

In 1730 the first chapel was built on site, which led to the foundation of the parish in 1792. A church of St. Anna built in 1848 on the outskirts of the village burned down in 1856, the fittings with gilded altars, wrought iron candlesticks and pulpit were lost, only the wooden crucifix could be saved. First a new roof was built for continued operation.

After plans for new buildings from 1858 at a more central, more dignified location, negotiations began in 1877 about the construction of the current structure on a donated property. Construction on the Plaza de Armas began under the direction of the builder Jacinto Contreras in 1882 for financial reasons and lasted until 1894. The three-aisled staggered church with apse was equipped with altars that show a mixture of Romanesque and Baroque elements . The paintings came from France, as did some liturgical vestments . On 1050 square meters, the church offers space for a maximum of two thousand people. The initially wooden, now steel bell gable , which bears the bells from 1908, protrudes from the entrance facade .

The church was first badly damaged by the earthquake of 1906, in which the wooden crucifix was destroyed, and later by the earthquake of 1985, the latter of which destroyed the roof and parts of the facade. Reconstruction began in 1991 with reinforced walls, which was ceremoniously completed on September 28, 1996 with the consecration. On May 6, 1997, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of minor basilica . The basilica survived the severe earthquake of 2010 well.
