history

Pilgrimage to St. Anne in front of the sanctuary

The first St. Anne's Congregation was founded in 1846 by missionaries from the Society of Foreign Missions in Paris . The first chapel was built on the hill by Father Adolphe Couellan. As the Catholic population grew, a new church was built, which opened in 1888. It was the main church for the annual celebrations for the feast of St. Anne. In the 1950s, during the guerrilla warfare of Darurat Malaya , the church grounds were designated as a restricted area and in 1958 a parish church was built two kilometers away, which remained the parish center for over 40 years. The state of emergency was not lifted until 1960. During these years, pilgrims had to commute between this church and the St. Anne's Shrine. In 1977 the church began to move to the damaged Sanctuary of St. Anne and the long restoration work began. The stained glass windows and one of the three bells were recovered.

In 2002 a new church was built again. Work on the new St. Anne's Church began in 2000 and was completed two years later on July 26, 2002 with the consecration. This church can seat 2200 people and is one of the largest in Malaysia. A campanile was erected next to her . It was opened by the then Apostolic Delegate in Malaysia. This church has Minangkabau roofs that reflect Malaysian culture. A park with the avenue Dataran St. Anne and the pilgrimage center Domus St. Anne was built around the new church and the old sanctuary to accommodate pilgrims. There was also a rectory, a community center and a presbytery. In 2006 the great Stations of the Cross followed and in 2008 a Marian grotto , in 2010 the second pilgrims' hostel, St. Anne's Dorm.

Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 2019 .
