history

The history of the original mission church goes back to the beginning of the settlement of the city of Alameda. In 1873 the Catholic Mission in Alameda was founded by Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany y Conill of San Francisco to serve the growing Roman Catholic population. The parish of St. Joseph was founded in 1885. After two enlargements, the church was replaced in 1891 by a new building next to the girls' school. With the installation of John J. Sullivan, previously pastor of the then Cathedral of San Francisco, the construction of a larger church was initiated again. The foundation stone was laid on August 12, 1894; Archbishop Patrick William Riordan consecrated the neo-Gothic wooden church on January 20, 1895. This wooden church burned down completely on the night of September 29, 1919. The foundation stone for today's church was laid on August 22, 1920 by the Archbishop of San Francisco, Edward Joseph Hanna . The first mass in the new church was celebrated at Christmas 1921. After parishes, the church was only responsible for the center of Alameda from 1925. On August 17, 1935, Archbishop of San Francisco John Joseph Mitty presided over the consecration of the altar and St. Joseph Church. It was one of the few churches consecrated in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

In the spring of 1972, the St. Josephs Church of Pope Paul VI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica. The basilica was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1978 .

Building

The new church was designed by Massachusetts-born architect Henry Anthony Minton, who had come west after the 1906 earthquake to help rebuild San Francisco. The church was built in the Spanish colonial style, based on the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo in Monterey . The church received a bell donated by the Knights of Columbus, which was cast from the metal of the bell of the burnt down church. The basilica has an organ made by Schoenstein & Co. from San Francisco .
