The Basilica of St. Quirinus ( Croatian Bazilika Sv. Kvirina ) is a modern Roman Catholic church in Sisak , Croatia . The church of the diocese of Sisak , which was (re) established in 2009 , is consecrated to the early Christian bishop of the city, Quirinus of Siscia , and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

After initial considerations in 1994 to intensify the veneration of the patron saint of the region, the Archdiocese of Zagreb started the competition to build the new church in 1996. The winner was the architect Ivan Antolić from Zagreb, who had already built several other churches in the region. The church was completed in 2003. In 2014, Pope Francis gave the church the title of Basilica minor . The papal nuncio Alessandro D'Errico presided over the pontifical ministry on June 4, 2014, on the feast of the patron saint of the diocese of Sisak and the city of Sisak, and said in the greeting that he did not expect the application of the title of Basil to be accepted in such a short time would be; the application submitted by Bishop Vlado Košić at the end of January had already been answered positively by the Congregation for Divine Worship on March 18.

The monumental and expressive design by Ivan Antolić takes up an area of ​​40 x 24 meters. The church space offers 380 seats and 1000 standing places on 450 square meters. The basilica was built in reinforced concrete and is dominated by the bell tower above the entrance area with a height of 36.8 meters, which with the cross reaches 42 meters. Elements of the classic basilica are used with the vestibule and the apses around the raised chancel . The covered forecourt is intended to be used to set up the altar for masses on the forecourt.
