The Basilica of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ( Spanish Basílica del Corazón de María ) is a Roman Catholic church in the provincial capital Antofagasta in Chile . The church belonging to the Archdiocese of Antofagasta is consecrated to the Blessed Mother Mary under the patronage of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

Members of the Order of Claretians came to Antofagasta in 1903. They built the wooden chapel of the Immaculate Conception , which, along with the rectory, fell victim to a fire in 1912. Only a few sacred objects and the carved image of the Heart of Mary could be saved.

Construction of the new church began in 1913 and was consecrated on December 8, 1928, the day of the Immaculate Conception. After the 1995 earthquake, the damaged statue of the Virgin Mary on the dome had to be replaced with a copy made from lighter materials. In 1999, gave Pope John Paul II. The church of the parish of Immaculate Conception under the name Church of the Heart of Mary minor the title of Basilica.

Building

The three-aisled basilica with a length of 55 meters has a two-tower facade , the bell towers of which reach a height of 35 meters and frame a large rose window . The style mix of the church combines the neo-Byzantine and neo-Gothic character with a large octagonal dome above the choir , on whose lantern the 3.5 meter statue of the Virgin Mary stands at a height of 55 meters. The upper storey is covered by a ribbed vault .
