description

Inner dome

The Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu church was designed in the neo-romantic style of historicism . The three-aisled basilica on the plan of a Latin cross opens with a double tower facade . The central nave leads under the eight-sided crossing dome with a lantern to the apse , in which the main altar is located. The central nave is supported by square columns with a base, shaft and smooth capitals. The side aisles are designed as corridors.

The interior is richly decorated with images. It was entirely created between 1951 and 1955 by Juan Augusto Fusilier, an important Argentine painter of religious works. The main altar is made of well-stuccoed pine, whose painting technique imitates marble and onyx. In addition to a statue of the Virgin Mary and figures of saints, it shows a portrait of Mary, which Salvador Joaquín de Ezpeleta, an important founding citizen of Victoria, is said to have brought with him on one of the trips and which appears in the inventory from 1839. Later, as is customary with depictions of the Madonna from Oñati in the Spanish Basque Country , a hawthorn tree wrapped in a cloud and a shepherd at the foot were included in the picture.
