The Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes is a parish church in the northern Chapinero district of Bogotá , the capital of Colombia . The Church of Our Lady of the Archdiocese of Bogota is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and has the rank of a minor basilica . The second largest church in the city after Bogotá Cathedral was built in the 19th and 20th centuries as the first church in Colombia in the neo-Gothic style .

history

At the instigation of Archbishop Vicente Arbelaez, the architect Julian Lombana from Bogota began building the church in neo-Gothic-Moorish style in 1875. The church was supposed to form the core of the urbanization of the villa suburb of Chapinero. The parish was established in 1903, and in 1917 the ambitious original proportions of the church were changed. The organ was imported from Germany in 1950. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes was crowned in 1988 by Cardinal Mario Revollo Bravo . Restoration work started in 2012. In 2015 the church was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. Elevated to the minor basilica, this was solemnly proclaimed on the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11, 2016 by the Archbishop of Bogotá, Cardinal Rubén Salazar Gómez .

Building

The low aisles of the three-aisled basilica continue in a three-sided ambulatory . The central nave has a triforium above the height of the side aisles and rows of ceilings windows below the vaults . In contrast to the Gothic style, the cross vaults are round. In the otherwise white and gold-colored church, the area around the Lourdes altar is in Marian blue with gold stars. The polychrome glass windows were made by the German-born artist Walter Wolf Wasserhouen (1906–1980) in his studio in Bogotá.

The 60 meter high square tower completed in the course of the 20th century completes the facade.
