history

Harihar is a pilgrimage site in the center of Karnataka. It goes back to an event around 1800, when a Brahmin was saved from drowning in the Tungabhadra River by a statue of the Virgin Mary . After the statue was worshiped in a tree niche and various healings attributed to it, a first chapel was built at the Brahmin's house in 1833 under the invocation of the Mother of Health, as was documented in 1895.

After purchasing a piece of land in 1954, the first church was built by 1963. When the church was consecrated by Archbishop of Bangalore Thomas Pothakamury , the statue of the Virgin Mary was transferred from the chapel that has been preserved to this day. After the parish was founded in 1977 and a health station was built in 1985, construction of today's church began in 1989 and was completed in 1992. The consecration was carried out by the first bishop of Shimoga Ignatius Paul Pinto . In 2002 a pilgrimage center was built. In 2012, the Church of Harihar was declared a diocesan shrine. Pope Francis elevated the church to the third minor basilica in the state of Karnataka in 2019 .
