from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of Cobre ( Spanish Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Caridad del Cobre ) is a Roman Catholic church in Havana , Cuba . The parish church of the Archdiocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana with the patronage of the Blessed Virgin of Cobre is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The original parish church was built in 1739 with the patronage of the Virgin of Guadalupe . When Havana was conquered by the British in 1762, this church was destroyed and later served as a quarry, as no buildings were to stand outside the city walls for reasons of defense tactics. In 1779 the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was transferred to the La Salud church. The new parish church was built in the vicinity from 1819 in the style of eclecticism , the completion of which lasted until 1839 without the towers. Due to the popular but long pilgrimage to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, the church received the same patronage from Pope Pius X in 1913 . By 1915 the facade was renewed and a church tower was built, which lost its top during cyclone Agnes in 1972. Pope Benedict XVI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica in 2011 .

architecture

The three-aisled church has a crossing dome with a tambour at the transition to the transepts . The central nave takes up half the width of the church and is roofed with a barrel vault , which rests on the arcades delimiting the side aisles with cross-shaped pillars. The choir is also covered by a barrel vault.
