history

After missionary work in the 1880s by the Belgian Constant Lieven , also known as the Apostle of Chotanagpur, a village school was founded in Kiwali in 1903 and a chapel was built in 1907. In 1948 it was relocated to Bhuthataur, still as part of the parish of St. Mary's Cathedral in Ranchi.

In 1952, Father Defrijn laid the foundation stone for the construction of a church in Ulhatu and a simple school building. The church was officially organized in 1953. Soon pilgrims came to Ulhatu.

In 1995 a new parish church in Ulhatu was consecrated. In 2004 the church was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II . The church was then further equipped for the appropriate celebration of the sacraments in 2013 and 2014 and also had to be expanded. In 2016, the elevation of the church was solemnly proclaimed by Telespohre Cardinal Toppo in a church consecration . The most important part of the church furnishings is the statue of Our Lady of Halle , who is feeding the baby Jesus. It also refers to Lieven's Flemish origins.

In 2017 the first pilgrimage to the basilica was carried out. There are several schools and monasteries in the area around the community.
