Bastian Wernthaler

Bastian Alexander Wernthaler (born June 12, 1976 in Munich ) is a German sports official, lawyer and former basketball coach . He was head coach of the German women's national team in two terms and led TSV Wasserburg to three German championship titles. He has been President of the Bavarian Basketball Association since 2019

career

After previous activities as a coach of youth teams, Wernthaler trained, among others, the MTSV Schwabing and Munich Basket in the first women's division. He led the MTSV into the DBBL Top4 in 2006 and into the DBBL Cup final in the following year. In 2005 he was named Trainer of the Year by the Bavarian Basketball Association.

In February 2010 he took over the post of head coach of the female U20 national team in Germany and supervised the DBB selection in July of the same year at the U20 European Championship in Latvia.

In October 2010, the German Basketball Association announced that Wernthaler will succeed Imre Szittya as head coach of the German women's national team. Qualification for the 2011 European Championships in Poland was achieved under Wernthaler's leadership. The EM finished the DBB selection in 13th place. Andreas Wagner was named as his successor in December 2011 .

Between 2012 and 2015, Wernthaler led the DBBL club TSV 1880 Wasserburg to three German championship titles (2013, 2014 and 2015) and two German cup titles (2014 and 2015).

In March 2015, he again took over the position of national coach for the women's national team and held this position until mid-March 2017. With the retirement as national coach, he also declared his coaching career in competitive sports over.

In March 2018, Wernthaler was elected to the position of youth officer of the Bavarian Basketball Association (BBV), and in May 2019 he took up the position of BBV President.

Practice as a lawyer

Wernthaler is a full-time lawyer. He graduated from high school in England and then studied law in Munich. He then completed his legal clerkship at the Munich Higher Regional Court. He has been admitted to the bar since 2005.
