The Bates Peak is a 600 m high mountain on the West Antarctic Rothschild Island . It rises west of the Fournier Ridge in the Desko Mountains .
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him after Commander Lawrence O. Bates of the United States Coast Guard , senior officer on USCGC Edisto during Operation Deep Freeze in 1969.
