The Bates Point is an ice-covered headland which the north side of the entrance to Yule Bay on the Pennell Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land marked.
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using surveys and aerial photographs by the United States Navy between 1960 and 1963. It is named after Lieutenant Thomas R. Bates, surgeon and medical officer at McMurdo Station in 1964.
