Baudilio Palma
Baudilio Palma (* 1880 - December 17, 1930 in Guatemala City ) was President of Guatemala from December 13 to December 17, 1930 .
Life
Baudilio Palma was finance minister and second deputy to the president in the government cabinet of Lázaro Chacón González .
Since Chacón suffered from hemiplegia of the right side, Palma took on the executive role of the president.
On December 13, 1930, Chacón's resignation was accepted by parliament and Palma was confirmed as his successor. On December 16, 1930, the presidency of Palma was diplomatically recognized by US President Herbert C. Hoover in a telegram. On December 17, 1930, the commander of the Cuartel de Matamoros , General Manuel María Orellana Contreras , drunk with pistols in his fists, accompanied by a few soldiers , entered the official residence of the President and forced Baudilio Palma to write his resignation.
During this occupation 57 people were injured, some fatally. There are contradicting information about the whereabouts of Palma. One version causes him to flee via the UK embassy to the El Salvador embassy. Another version has him take refuge with the envoy of the German Reich. It is unlikely that Orellana would have released Palma from the presidential residence alive. The first deputy of Chacón, General Mauro de León, was Minister of War at the time of the acceptance of Chacón's resignation, which excluded him from assuming the presidency under the Guatemala Constitution, but did not save him from having him in the wake of the fall of Palma was killed.
Manuel María Orellana Contreras usurpation of the presidency was not recognized by the US government under Herbert Hoover. The US Ambassador Sheldon Whitehouse threatened an invasion of the US Marines if a constitutional president was not appointed by the end of 1930.
On December 31, 1930, parliament accepted Palma's resignation. The resignation was signed by the MPs of the Partido Liberal Progresista from Jorge Ubico Castañeda .
Parliament then appointed the first, second and third substitutes for Manuel María Orellana Contreras . The deputy and notary José María Reina Andrade became the first deputy . The notorious Ubico supporter General José Reyes became second deputy and Minister of War. The third deputy was the Jefe Político of Zacapa , General Rodrigo G. Solórzano.
