José María Reina Andrade ( 1860 - 1947 ) was President of Guatemala from January 2 to February 14, 1931 .

Life

Reina was a lawyer, notary and member of parliament.

The presidency of Manuel María Orellana Contreras was not recognized by the US government under Herbert Hoover . The US Ambassador Sheldon Whitehouse threatened, if a constitutional president was not appointed by the end of 1930, with an invasion by the Marine Corps .

On December 31, 1930, Parliament accepted Baudilio Palma's resignation . The resignation was signed by members of the Partido Liberal Progresista , the party of Jorge Ubico Castañeda . Parliament then appointed the first, second and third deputies for Lázaro Chacón González . Reina Andrade became the first deputy. The notorious Ubico supporter General José Reyes became second deputy and Minister of War. The third deputy was the Jefe Político of Zacapa , General Rodrigo G. Solórzano.

Reina Andrade was sworn in on January 2, 1931 in Parliament. As Ubico's puppet in the presidential office, he carried out numerous measures to secure the election of Ubico as president. On January 4, 1930, he called for presidential elections.

Adán Manrique Ríos, loyal to Ubico, was appointed Reina's secretary. General Roderico Anzueto, another Ubico supervisor, was appointed Director de la Policía . The commandos of the barracks in Guatemala City Fuerte de Matamoros , Castillo de San José and Guardia de Honor were manned with Ubico supporters. This time Ubico wanted to make sure, in the elections on March 1, 1922 he was defeated against José María Orellana Pinto and in the elections on December 2, 1926 against Lázaro Chacón González . At Ubico's request, February 9, 1931 was set as the election date, February 14, 1931 as taking office and March 15, 1931 as the confirmation date for Parliament. The confirmation date by parliament would have had the consequence of a constitutional president that the term of office would have ended six years later, on March 15, 1937, which Ubico did not adhere to.

Under the dictatorship of Ubico, José María Reina Andrade was presiding judge at the Supreme Court of Guatemala from 1933 to 1936.
