Bax (Bcl-2-associated X protein) is a protein in vertebrates , which as a co-factor of the tumor suppressor protein p53 acts. The Bax gene belongs to the Bcl-2 gene family. Bax is induced by p53 and accelerates the initiation of apoptosis . Low Bax release correlates with a poor prognosis for oral cancer .
