Baygon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A series of products with insecticidal properties are sold worldwide under the trade name Baygon . They are designed for use in the household. Offered sprays against flying and crawling insects, powder, bait boxes against ants and cockroaches , moth paper and electronic pest control to ward off mosquitoes. The brand owner was originally Bayer AG . In 2003 she sold parts of the household insecticide business to the American company SC Johnson & Son , including the rights to the Baygon brand . The insecticidal active ingredients are still supplied by Bayer.

Active ingredients

According to the manufacturer, the products of the Baygon series contain the carbamate propoxur and the pyrethroids cyfluthrin and transfluthrin in different compositions. In May 2007, Propoxur was no longer mentioned on the website with the active ingredients it contains. Baygon products used to contain the active ingredient dichlorvos , which is no longer contained, at least in Europe. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh discovered in 2001 that the ingredient propoxur can cause leukemia in unborn children .

Advertising slogan

Bayer AG published an advertisement for Baygon in 1996 in the Guatemalan daily Prensa Libre under the title "Sudden death is a specialty from Germany" ( La muerte subita es una especialidad Alemana ), which was based on the German golden goal victory in football EM final referenced. Due to various criticisms, Bayer AG withdrew the advertising slogan as an "unfortunate play on words".
