The Bayou Plaquemine Lock is a disused lock and monument in Plaquemine in Iberville Parish , Louisiana . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972 and is open to the public as the Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site . The earlier function of the lock was to create a navigable connection between the Mississippi River and its former estuary , the Bayou Plaquemine .
history
Until 1867, the Bayou Plaquemine was an arm of the Mississippi River that was navigable for larger ships. Then it was cut off against the backdrop of large-scale levee construction on the Mississippi in Iberville Parish. The Bayou Plaquemine Lock was built from 1895 to 1909 to restore a navigable connection between the Mississippi River and Bayou Plaquemine as a lock system. In September 1961, this traffic route was finally closed because it was no longer needed due to the expansion of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway .
On May 19, 1972, the Bayou Plaquemine Lock was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a site .
Building description
The lock system was built by George Washington Goethals , who later became the site manager for the Panama Canal , on an area of almost 5.7 hectares . At the time of its completion, the Bayou Plaquemine Lock had the highest drop of all freshwater locks in the world . On the southern side of the lock is the pump house , which has been preserved to this day.
