Bazzania tricrenata (recumbent whip moss ) is a liverwort species from the Lepidoziaceae family and belongs to the group of leafed liverworts.

features

The medium-sized to large plants that grow in brown-green lawns are forked, ascending to upright, flattened to convex, 1.5 millimeters wide and up to 7 centimeters long. The triangular flank leaves, which overlap like roof tiles, are a little longer than they are wide and usually have 3 roughly equal teeth on the tip of the leaf, which is often bent downwards. The front, basal leaf margin is strongly curved and extends well beyond the center of the stem. Lower leaves are wider than long, up to about twice as wide as the stem and entire or toothed to notched. As with other Bazzania species, whip-shaped flagella arise from the underside of the trunk.

The lamina cells are about 25 to 35 µm in size in the middle of the leaf, have little or no corner thickening and 2 to 4 oil bodies per cell .

The species is dioecious . Sporogons are very rare. The perianth is up to 4 millimeters long and 0.8 to 1 millimeter wide, the seta 1 to 2 centimeters long. The papillary spores are 18 to 20 µm in size.

Possibility of confusion

Bazzania tricrenata can be confused with the similar Bazzania flaccida . The two species were not differentiated until the last century and the delimitation is sometimes difficult, as both species can more or less similar in terms of characteristics. Bazzania flaccida is usually smaller and has narrower, sometimes slightly sloping leaves.

Location claims and distribution

Bazzania tricrenata grows on moist, lime-free rock, on raw humus or, more rarely, on rotten wood. The species is distributed around the circumference, apart from larger distribution gaps. In Central Europe, the deposits are in the higher low mountain ranges and the Alps above about 800 meters above sea level.
